为考察地理系统的性质而用类比方法进行实验或观测，并进行动态演示的研究方法。地理系统是一个多层次的开放系统、动态系统，而且一个系统与其他地理系统发生相互作用，每一系统内部又存在多种要素间的联系。故对其直接进行研究几乎是不可能的。地理模拟有3种类型：①模拟实验。如风洞实验、水槽实验等，都是用小型的实物进行实验；②相似模拟。如对地理系统中水分传输过程转化为电学中的电传导，并对水分传输的规律进行实验的方法；③数学模拟。如研究作物产量这一复杂对象，可提出数学结构式，编制对它进行处理的数字计算机程序，即可在计算机中进行模拟。以上只是大致分类，实际上通常是以这些类型的混合形式进行地理模拟，无论何种类型，其目的都在于定量地阐明事物本质，重点在于掌握数学结构并建立模型。
