机库位于飞行甲板下面，因此，飞机在机库和飞行甲板之间的移动需要借助于升降机。早期航母的升降机一般布置在飞行甲板的中线上，称之为“舷内升降机”。这种升降机不受风浪影响；但它既影响了飞行甲板的强度，又影响了飞机的起降。美国在1942的完工的“埃塞克斯”号上首先采用了“舷侧升降机”，它消除了上述缺点。不过也存在着易受风浪影响的不足。
权衡利弊，舷侧式升降机被普遍应用于现代航母上。美国海军从“福莱斯特”号开始一律使用舷侧升降机，一般设4台，左舷1台，右舷3台。以“企业”号上的升降机为例，它是用镁铝合金制造的，长23.5米，宽15.9米，面积374平方米，自重105吨。这种升降机可容纳2架主翼折叠的a－7攻击机，具有1分钟内升降全重47.6吨的能力
