法国现代化综合性文献情报服务机构。以国家前总统乔治·蓬皮杜(1911～1974)命名。设于巴黎。1977年2月2日建成开放，隶属于法国文化部图书与阅读管理局。该馆实行开架阅览，以多种现代化手段向所有情报需求者 (无需借阅证)提供新型的文献信息服务。 建筑面积15445平方米，工作人员280余人，馆藏文献涉及自然科学、技术、社会科学、历史、地理、艺术、娱乐、体育、哲学、宗教、语言和文学等。除印刷型文献外，它还提供多种载体的信息服务，包括缩微胶片、缩微胶卷、幻灯片、录音带和光盘等。在这里可通过各种媒介欣赏世界著名的音乐作品、摄影作品、美术作品和经典影片等。其语言学习室配置有62张语言学习桌，提供86种语言的学习录音材料。卫星电视接收设备定时现场转播世界各主要国家以 6种语言播放的电视广播节目。音乐欣赏区设有40台听音设备，馆中还设有数十台缩微制品阅读器和数十台录像或光盘放映设备。此外，还提供国内或国际联机检索服务和电话解答咨询服务。
1987年，馆藏有50万卷图书，2200种期刊(其中745种为缩微制品),20万帧图片，14万件唱片、录音录像磁带和光盘，56万张幻灯片,1.8万卷缩微胶卷，63万件缩微胶片，2000部电影片和4000幅地图。该馆每年接待读者400多万人次，其中约30％为外国人。
