本区地处我国海岸线的西南部，南濒北部湾，属南亚热带海洋性气候。区内水质良好，水下有众多潮流脊与潮流深槽及潮间浅滩，海草蘩茂，生境适宜，是我国儒良活动的密集区域。儒良为国家一级重点保护野生动物，也属世界性珍稀濒危水生哺乳动物，该的建立对保护和恢复儒良种群具有重要意义。
