美国研究图书馆组织(RLG)的图书馆自动化网络,网络主机设在斯坦福大学。1978年在斯坦福大学的大型图书馆目录自动化作业分时系统(BALLOTS) 的基础上建立。到1990年底,RLG的各类成员包括106个研究图书馆,RLIN的用户有1100个。网络的数据文档主要为著录图书、期刊、档案手稿、乐谱、地图、缩微品、声像记录等的书目数据库,还包括工程引文(CIT)、18世纪资料(ESTC)、建筑杂志索引(AVERY，AVERY REF)、艺术品销售目录、名字规范文档，到1990年底已存储书目文献记录和事实信息4500万条。网络功能有联机联合编目、采购处理、馆际互借、书目与规范文档检索以及情报检索等，并实现了西文与中文、日文、朝鲜文、希伯莱文、阿拉伯文等的综合书目处理。该网络的特点是：以专业学术资料丰富的大学和研究机构为基础，根据成员的实际需求开发项目，文献著录格式规范统一，检索途径广泛、灵活。
