我国是世界上荒漠化最为严重的国家之一，现有荒漠化土地39.3亿亩，占国土陆地面积的27.3%。涉及18个省(区、市)的471个县(旗)。目前，全国每年荒漠化净扩展面积已超过1000万亩。
荒漠化导致了土地生产力的严重衰退。全国草场退化20亿亩，占荒漠化地区草场面积的59.6%，每年因此少养羊5000多万只；耕地退化1.16亿亩，占荒漠化地区耕地面积的40.1%。近年来，我国每年因荒漠化造成的直接经济损失达540亿元。1993年5月西北地区的特大沙尘暴，席卷新疆、甘肃、宁夏、内蒙古的72个县(旗)，农业受灾面积505万亩。
荒漠化还加剧了整个生态环境的恶化。每年输入黄河的16亿吨泥沙中，就有12亿吨来自荒漠化地区。特大沙尘暴，60年代发生了8次，70年代发生了13次，80年代发生了14次，90年代已经发生了23次。
