网络协议即网络中（包括互联网）传递、管理信息的一些规范。如同人与人之间相互交流是需要遵循一定的规矩一样，计算机之间的相互通信需要共同遵守一定的规则，这些规则就称为网络协议。而为各种无线设备互通信息而制定的规则我们把它称之为“无线网络协议标准”。
目前常用的无线网络标准主要有美国IEEE（电机电子工程师协会，TheInstituteofElectricalandElectronicsEngineers）所制定的802.11标准（包括802.11a、802.11b及802.11g等标准），蓝牙（Bluetooth）标准以及HomeRF（家庭网络）标准等。
