根据用户所提问题的性质，咨询服务工作大致可分为 3类：①文献咨询服务，向用户提供文献线索或原始文献或其复制件，还可根据用户要求提供原始文献的译文。②数据咨询服务，向用户提供有关的数字数据或非数字数据(如分子式、结构式、方程式等)。③科技咨询服务，情报部门以专门的知识和技术协助用户解决某些复杂的技术问题，不仅提供文献资料，而且要进一步提供解决问题的方案、建议。科技咨询服务与情报研究虽有某些交叉，但并不相同。目前文献咨询服务的比重较大，大体有下列 3种方式：①为课题提供所需参考文献。根据用户提出的课题，通过主题或分类途径利用检索工具查得文献线索，以题录、简介或文摘的形式提供给用户。②提供某一作者所著的文献。当用户要求了解某一作者在一定时期、一定方面的著作时,情报部门应通过作者或机构途径进行检索,并将检索所得提供给用户。③提供具体馆藏文献。当情报用户已经知道文献线索,并提出具体要求时，情报部门应根据文献的书名或篇名或编号、作者姓名、机构名称等途径，通过馆藏目录或目录卡片或联合目录等，查出文献的馆藏单位及其索取号，并向用户提供文献原文。
