川剧演员,工丑。原名兴文。四川隆昌县人。出身于贫苦农家,自幼入川戏班学艺。16岁又入资阳大名班附设的三字科班深造,受业于岳春、萧遐亭、罗开堂等名角,先习武生,后改学丑。演戏认真、踏实、不尚卖弄。每演一戏,必先对剧本主题、人物性格做透彻了解。善于随处留心,观察揣摩世态人情,提炼入戏,并能借鉴京、汉等剧种长处,补己之短。身怀绝技,不废基功,直到80多岁高龄,还能演出《扯符吊打》、《毛延寿奔番》等功夫戏。活跃于川剧舞台70多年,以其精湛的表演技艺,塑造了不少纨袴子弟、赃官、暴君的形象。1918年,在重庆发起创办裕民科社,热情教授艺徒,对川剧艺术事业作出了贡献。刘成基、周裕祥、李文杰等均受其教益。
