1959年，美国心脏病学家M.H.弗里德曼和R.H.罗森曼发现冠心病在美国的发病与病人的行为之间有明显的统计学相关。这种人表现好胜，竞争性强，急躁，缺少耐心,有时间紧迫感。他们把这种人的行为称为A型行为，把这种人的个性称为A型性格。与此相反的性格称为B型性格。罗森曼等对具有A、B型行为的健康人随访8年,发现具有A型行为的人患冠心病的比具有B型行为的人多两倍。
20世纪初期，心身医学的先驱者之一H.F.邓巴就曾观察到特殊疾病与特殊性格间的关系，她认为那些雄心勃勃、工作努力的人易患冠状动脉硬化性心脏病和心肌梗死。
