垂直发射(vl)型“米卡”是第一套能对抗饱和攻击的点防御导弹系统。它由法国马持拉公司研制，采用的导弹是以“米卡”空空导弹为基础发展的，可在全天候和任何电子战环境下昼夜实施对抗；并具有推力矢量控制系统，可垂直发射，从而提高了射速和灵活性，缩短了反应时间。
vl型“米卡”是一种“发射后不用管”武器，主要的制导系统在弹上，在飞行过程中系统完全自主，采用主动雷达寻的或红外成像制导。由于vl型“米卡”是模块化垂直发射单元，因此其数量可以任意增减以适应不同吨位的水面舰艇，而且可整体加装在甲板或舰艇的上层建筑上。vl型“米卡”不会破坏舰船原有的整体隐身能力，并且能与舰上现成的传感器系统有效整合，无须设计专门的火控系统，甚至不用专门的控制台。这极大地降低了vl型“米卡”的改装费用，对于许多经费有限而又急于提升舰艇点防御能力的国家具有很强的吸引力。
