依装订方法和形式的不同，分为平装、精装和线装3 类(也有把平装中的骑马订装单独列作一类的)。订本方法有铁丝订、骑马订、缝纫订、锁线订、粘胶订和塑线烫订等。平装书刊一般用纸封面，精装书刊多用硬质纸板作书壳，并经装饰加工后做成封面。线装是中国传统的书籍装订形式， 在古籍的整理出版中， 除采用平、精装形式外，也有部分沿用线装。
