面向全国少年儿童的综合性出版社，1956年 6月成立于北京。根据党的出版方针和教育方针，共青团、少年先锋队的工作要求，主要出版适于15岁以下在校学生阅读，以帮助他们德智体美全面发展的各类读物，同时也出版供学龄前儿童阅听的幼儿读物。从建社起到1986年6月，出版各类图书1500种，印行2.6亿册。其中，丛书有30多套，规模最大的是《少年百科丛书》，已出版160 多种，发行4800万册；另有一套40个选题全部彩印的《中华人物故事全书》也已开始出版。影响较大的图书有《大地的儿子──周恩来的故事》、《八十年寻路记──中国人是怎样找到马克思主义的》、《中国历史故事集》、《稻草人和其他童话》、《宝葫芦的秘密》、《小兵张嘎》、《小布头奇遇记》、《盐丁儿》、《数学花园漫游记》等。低幼读物《渔童》、《小蝌蚪找妈妈》、《金瓜儿银豆儿》、《幼儿一日一课》、《婴幼儿小百科》等，也受到小读者及家长们的欢迎。至1989年，发行 100万册以上的书有40种，在各种评奖活动中得奖的书有51种，有29种被改编成电影或电视片。出版的期刊有《中学生》 、《中国儿童》 、《儿童文学》、《我们爱科学》、《幼儿画报》、《婴儿画报》、《读书报》等。
