为吸入甲氧氟烷达到全身麻醉。它是一种强效吸入麻醉药，MAC为0.16%，镇痛作用亦强。但其血气分配系数大(13)，诱导及苏醒均慢。随麻醉加深，血压下降，程度较氟烷为轻；对呼吸抑制作用大于氟烷，可出现呼吸性酸中毒；恶心呕吐率低于乙醚而多于氟烷；可抑制子宫收缩；肌松作用强于氟烷；对肝肾功能影响与乙醚相似，其麻醉后肾衰发生率为0.03%。由于缺点较多，目前已罕用，偶用作小儿(小剂量、短时间)辅助诱导麻醉。
