将景物自然发射的3～5微米或 8～12微米波段内的红外辐射转换为可见图像的装置。这种图像又称为热像。热像反映被摄景物各部分与温度有关的辐射信息，广泛用于夜视、医学和需要温度检测的场合。摄像是采用光机扫描成像技术分解光学像，在每一瞬间只显示景物中一个面元上的红外辐射。70年代，运用各种旋转多面镜或摆动平面镜等的光学-机械扫描系统达到实用阶段,以单个或线列红外探测器顺序接收背景和物体按空间变化的辐射功率，并转换为按时间变化的电信号输出，采用电子技术处理后，以可见光形式显示图像。热成像技术的发展将是用固体自扫描的焦平面红外器件和基于电子束扫描的热释电摄像管取代机械扫描。
