| 星座 constellation 为了便于研究而将星空划分成的许多区域。世界上不同地区对星座的划分是不同的。中国古代采用的是三垣二十八宿。而今使用的星座系统起源于巴比伦。早在几千年前，巴比伦就选出显著的星群，从神话中给它们配上想象的形状和图形。公元2世纪，古希腊天文学家托勒密编制出列有48个星座的星表。后来欧洲的一些天文学家陆续加以补充、发展。1841年J.F.W.赫歇尔提出星座界线，以赤经线和赤纬线划分。1928年，国际天文学联合会公布88个星座（其中北天28个，黄道12个，南天48个）方案，并规定以1875年的春分点（见分至点）和赤道为基准的赤经线和赤纬线，作为星座界线。星座大小不一，每一星座可由其中亮星的特殊分布而辨认出来。一些星座形象地反映出它们的名称，而有一些则需要凭借丰富的想象力才能想象出它们的相似性。88个星座的名称、略号、位置和21时过中天的日期见下表。
