dipole 指相距很近的符号相反的一对电荷或“磁荷”。如由正负电荷组成的电偶极子，其场力线分布如图。地球磁场可以近似地看作磁偶极子场。在物探中，研究偶极子场是很重要的，因为理论计算表明，均匀一次场中球形矿体的激发极化二次场与一个电流偶极子的电流场等效，某些磁异常也可以用磁偶极子场来研究。用等效的偶极子场来代替相应电、磁场的研究，可以简单清楚地得到场的空间分布形态和基本的数量概念，也便于作模型实验。
