雀形目太阳鸟科的太阳鸟属鸟类的通称。体型纤细，体长79～203毫米；嘴细长而下弯，嘴缘先端具细小的锯齿；舌呈管状，尖端分叉；尾呈楔形，雄鸟中央尾羽特别延长。世界共有14种，分布于亚洲南部、菲律宾群岛和印度尼西亚。中国有6种。
黄腰太阳鸟是该属的常见种。雄鸟：额和头顶前部绿色带金属光泽，头顶后部和枕部橄榄褐色；背部红色，下背及腰部亮黄色；尾上覆羽和中央尾羽与额部同色；颏、喉及胸呈鲜朱红色，远较背部红色鲜亮；下体余部淡灰黄沾绿色。雌鸟：额至枕部灰褐色；眼先灰色；上体橄榄绿色，腰和尾上覆羽沾黄；中央尾羽不像雄鸟那样细长；下体暗灰黄色。
性活泼，单个、成对或成小群在次生阔叶林或开花的乔木、灌木上活动；成群觅食时，常互相唤叫。飞行能力强而急速，喜急鼓两翅悬飞在花前。主要以花蜜为食，也吃花蕊、蜘蛛、膜翅目昆虫、蚁类、双翅目昆虫、寄生蜂、虻类以及种籽等。巢呈梨状，长径140～160毫米，宽径75～100毫米。在云南东南部和广东南部繁殖。
太阳鸟羽色艳丽，常被饲养作为观赏鸟。
