   天体在运动过程中,除了受中心主天体的引力作用外,还受到周围其他天体、介质等等诸多因素的作用,这些作用与中心体的引力相比是很小的,因此称为摄动。天体在摄动作用下,其坐标、速度或轨道要素都产生变化,这种变化成分称为摄动项。长期摄动是指天体的坐标、速度或轨道要素的摄动量中随着时间而单调增加或减少的部分,又称长期摄动项。长期摄动反映了天体运动轨道随时间演化的粗略规律,对于研究天体的演化过程和整个力学系统的宏观图像和稳定性有很重要的意义。18世纪以后,许多天体力学家都在研究大行星的运动轨道是否有长期摄动,并且证明,在精确到一阶、二阶小量的情况下大行星轨道大小不会有长期变化。人造天体运动理论中,长期摄动的存在与否是直接影响人造天体寿命的重要因素,例如由于地球大气阻力的长期摄动存在,可能导致人造地球卫星的轨道逐渐变小,最终落入大气层而坠毁。
