该弹是美国海军于50年代为高速飞机研制的一种新型炸弹，是mk80系列中的第二种，也是目前世界上使用较广泛的一种低阻炸弹。台湾引进后挂于f-5、f-16、idf等机型，主要用于攻击地面目标，是其非制导空对地武器的骨干型号。
