广义指采用电子计算机和排版软件对图文进行编辑加工，不经过印版在激光印字机上打印或利用电子媒介的出版。出现于20世纪70年代末。是一种比较方便的排版前处理系统，可与密纹只读存储器(简称CD-ROM)相连接，输出存储的大量数字信息，十分方便。
80年代以来，电子出版常专指台式电子出版 (简称DTP)，它更为简便，且具有一定的拼版功能，可按照使用要求处理印量较小的文件、资料、讲义、书刊、技术手册、产品目录等，并能插入表格和线条图。
台式电子出版设备投资小，只需 1人操作。激光印字机可在普遍纸上输出拼好的版面。分辨率达到每毫米11.8线，能满足一般出版物的质量要求，也适合在各单位内部使用，实现办公室自动化。因此台式电子出版技术发展很快。
