运行轨道为对地静止轨道的人造地球卫星。因与地面各点相对静止不动，故名。运行在赤道上空约35790千米高的圆轨道上，运行的角速度为72921×10-5弧度/秒。卫星在某些干扰力的作用下，轨道要发生变化，须经常进行轨道修正。广泛用作气象卫星、通信卫星和广播卫星等。
