将地球站(或飞行器)发来的通信信号经过放大、变频后再发向其他地球站（或飞行器）的无线电电子设备。通信转发器常装于通信卫星上，实现通信中继站的功能。它的主要组成部分有：①接收机：用于对输入信号进行低噪声接收、变频和放大。接收机由前置放大器、下变频器、本地振荡器和后置放大器组成。放大器常用低噪声场效应晶体管制成，采用多级串联方式来达到所要求的增益。②输入多工器：用于将信号按频带区分成多路，每路都经过带通滤波器和均衡器，并可独立调整。③激励放大器：由多级晶体管制成。用于把接收机送来的信号放大，以获取一定的增益和功率去激励末级功率放大器。④功率放大器：采用行波管放大器或固态功率放大器，将每路通信信号放大到规定的功率电平。⑤输出多工器：它的用途是减少或滤除转发器中产生的有害频率分量，并将各路信号合起来向发射天线馈送。转发器的主要技术指标是：增益(即功率放大量)、幅频特性、最大输出功率、噪声系数、交调电平、调幅调相变换系数和时延随频率的变化等。
