常用的是电流偶极子源模型。在大脑皮质层(主要是沟、回面)上的一群锥体神经元(功能柱),在兴奋或抑制地具有一定取向和充分长度的树突放电可能形成有效的电流偶极子,只要面积不太大,可看作一等效偶极子源,它在头皮上形成的电位分布即实验测到的脑电位分布。电磁场是相伴产生的,测得的脑电图EEG与脑磁图MEG正是相互对应的。建立头颅的模型用物理、数学模型作精确计算,可以对脑内发生器定位。这还涉及到多偶极子模型计算和均匀球模型或非均匀球模型及多层头皮模型的计算等。
