在种群生态学中，环境容纳量是指特定环境所能容许的种群数量的最大值。环境容纳量是环境制约作用的具体体现，有限的环境只能为有限生物的生存提供所需的资源。种群在有限环境中的有限增长是自然界中普遍存在的生态现象，环境容纳量是体现生物生存环境限制的重要指标，也昭示着生态系统生产力的自然极限。
环境容纳量的经济学意义在于，有限的自然环境不足以支撑无限增长的经济，经济增长在环境容纳量范围内是合理的，超越环境容纳量的经济增长是破坏性的，环境容纳量是传统工业经济发展的生态边界。
案例分析：有限环境中无限增长所导致的灾难性后果，人类社会同样无法幸免。
