北山羊形似家山羊而体形较大，体长115-170厘米，肩高约100厘米，体重50千克左右。雌雄体都有角，但雄羊角特别长大，达140多厘米，呈弧形向后弯曲。颏部有须，雄性长，雌性短。夏毛棕黄色，腹部及四肢内侧白色；冬毛长而色浅淡。尾长10-20厘米，尾尖棕黑色。
夏天栖息于高山草甸及裸岩区，冬春迁至海拔较低的地区活动。多在晨昏活动，采食各种野草。常十余只集群活动，有时可达数十只。性机警，视、听、嗅觉都很灵敏。11-12月份发情交配，次年5-6月份产仔，每胎1-2仔。我国北山羊的数量很少。
