描述AponogetonL.f.水蕹属，水蕹科，30种，分布于印度至我国南部，南至大洋洲，主产地为南非，我国有水蕹A.lakhonensisA.Camus1种，产南部浅水塘中或田中。水生草本，有块状根茎；叶沉水或浮水，有多数次生横脉；花两性，辐射对称，无苞片，生于单生或2叉状的穗状花序上；花被片1－3或缺，常宿存；雄蕊6或更多，离生；雌蕊3－6，离生，有胚珠2或多颗；果为革质的蓇葖果；种子无胚乳；胚劲直。（参考vanBruggen的“RevisionoftheGenusAponogeton”，载Blumea18：457－486，1970。）
