| 鸸鹋 Dromaius novaehollandiae；emu 鸟纲鹤鸵目鸸鹋科唯一残存种。又名澳洲鸵鸟。体高可达 1.8米，重36千克（雄）至41千克（雌）。嘴扁平似鸵鸟。足具 3 趾，均向前。头颈皮肤灰蓝色，着生有 黑色粗毛状短羽；体被松散的灰褐色羽毛，先端色暗；翅极小，隐于体羽下；3 趾均具钝爪 。栖息于砂质草原和比较开阔的森林内。平时集成小群，繁殖期成对生活。善奔跑，也会游泳。主要取食植物的果实、种子、叶、芽等，亦吃昆虫。雌雄外形相似 ，鸣叫时雌鸟如敲鼓声，雄鸟声音单调。5～ 8月繁殖。雌鸟产卵9～12枚，淡绿色。卵数达到 5～9枚时，雄鸟开始孵卵，孵卵期约56天，这期间很少离巢，不吃不喝，只是蹲着或站起翻卵。
