美国小说家、戏剧家。出生于纽约。1934年毕业于布鲁克林学院。第二次世界大战期间参加美国陆军通讯部队，到过中东、北非、英、德、法等地。年轻时曾在化妆品工厂、百货商店和家具公司任职，后来曾为广播电台写稿,担任纽约《新共和》杂志的戏剧评论员,并在纽约大学讲授文学创作。从1951年起定居欧洲，专门从事写作。他早期主要创作剧本。第一部反战的剧本《埋葬死者》(1936)出版后曾引起美国剧坛的注意。以后写的重要剧本有《文雅的人：一个布鲁克林寓言》(1939)、《刺客》(1944)、《游戏后的孩子们》(1963)。他最成功的长篇小说是描写第二次世界大战的《幼狮》(1949)，其他重要长篇小说有《烦恼的空气》(1951)、《夏日的声音》(1965)、《富人，穷人》(1970)、《夜间工作》(1975)等。1978年出版《短篇小说集：五十年》，收入他50年中写的较好的短篇小说。他关心社会问题，主张为人生而艺术。他的作品在不同程度上反映了美国政治、经济、社会和思想情况，文笔洗练，细节描写生动。
