性质:是人类首次提纯而得到病毒结晶,它是一种机械性传播的单链:RNA病毒,也是寄生范围广泛的植物病原病毒。呈管状病毒粒子(分子量400 000),约为15×300nm,沉降系数约200。由RNA(占总量5%)和蛋白质(占总量95%)组成,RNA由约6300个核苷酸组成螺旋状结构(直径4nm,螺距约2.5nm),大约2100个完全相同的蛋白质衣壳亚基与RNA内外连接形成螺旋结构。蛋白质亚基的装配从RNA的5端开始。每个蛋白亚基(分子量17 500)由一条多肽链组成,其中天门冬氨酸、谷氨酸、丝氨酸和苏氨酸残基比例较大。由TMV分离的组分(RNA和蛋白质)体外仍然可以重新构组。用硫酸铵沉淀感染TMV的植物组织,然后进行差速离心可制备纯化的TMV。在干叶组织中,TMV的感染力可维持1年以上。此病毒的热钝化温度约为95℃,超声波、pH值低于3或高于8和化学试剂(如甲醛、碘或尿素溶液)也可使其钝化。产生局部病斑的寄生有心叶烟和四季豆等。
