翅面橙黄色或橙红色，翅脉粗黑，前、后翅周缘黑色，有两列小白点，尤以后翅更明显，前翅顶角黑色，内有一斜列白斑带。雄蝶后翅在第2肘脉，内侧有黑色性斑，翅反面的雄性斑中心白色。周尧先生将本蝶列归斑蝶属（Danaus）命名为虎斑蝶（Danausgenutia）其名意在粗重的黑色翅脉在橙黄色翅面上有老虎斑纹之拟。
本种的幼虫和成蝶因取食植物而聚集毒素，使其敌害不敢侵犯，而被其他多种蝶类所模拟，借以御敌。国内分布于河南、江西、浙江、福建、台湾、广东、广西、海南、云南、四川、西藏。
翅展75-95毫米。
