蜥蜴目毒蜥科唯一的1属。体粗尾短,外形笨拙,体表华丽,在黄色或橙色的背景上具暗色的网纹。头部略扁,背面和四肢外侧被有大的骨板。有2种:毒蜥分布于美国西南部,全长多在500毫米左右;珠毒蜥分布于墨西哥,全长达900毫米。本属颈椎8枚。无颞弓,只有少数腭骨齿和翼骨齿。以小型哺乳动物、他种蜥蜴以及鸟和爬行动物的卵为食。7月交配,7月末到8月中在开阔地带挖掘深约125毫米的洞穴,然后在穴中产卵3~7枚,卵径(67~75)×(33~39)毫米,白色,壳薄而粗糙。孵化期28~30天。毒蜥的下颌有毒腺,毒液通过导管注入口腔,再经毒牙的沟注入被毒蜥咬住的伤口内。人被毒蜥咬伤有痛感,但极少致命。
