描述CercisL.紫荆属，云实科，约8种，分布于北美、东亚和南欧，我国有5种，产西南和中南，为美丽的庭园观赏树，其中紫荆C.chinensisBunge常见栽培。乔木或灌木；叶互生，具柄，掌状脉；花稍左右对称，具柄，排成一总状花序或花束，生于老枝上；萼红色，萼管偏斜，短，陀螺形或钟状，具短而阔的5齿；花瓣红色或粉红色，不相等，上面3枚稍小；雄蕊10，分离；子房具短柄，有胚珠多数；荚果压扁，长圆形或带状，腹缝有狭翅，迟裂；种子多颗，倒卵形。
