   形目属啄木鸟科的1属，体长约170毫米，翅长约85毫米。嘴中等长，成尖锥形；鼻孔大，具鼻膜；羽毛柔软，褐灰色；尾略呈方形，超过翅长的四分之三，羽尾柔韧。有2种。分布于欧洲、亚洲和非洲。中国只有1种，几乎见于国内各地。
　中国所产的蚁的上体大都银灰色，满杂以黑褐色细斑和粗纹，犹如蛇蜕或老树皮状。下体近白色，前部和两趾均具横斑。
　迁徙时常停在开阔林地的树上。性孤独，多单个活动，有时2～3只在一起。脚适于攀登，犹如啄木鸟，但常在地面觅食，因而被称为“地啄木”。在地面行走时，像麻雀一样跳跃，但尾巴向上翘。常伸展颈部向各方扭转，故俗名“歪脖”。飞行迟缓，突降突升。嗜食蚁类。舌长，先端具钩，并有粘液，能伸入树洞或蚁巢中取蚁。在树洞中营巢。每窝产卵6～12枚。分布西起英国,东至日本，南至赤道非洲、印度、东南亚。
