体长470-650毫米，体重2000-3000克。吻短，颜面由于直立而近似猿猴脸型。两耳短宽，耳端圆钝，两耳距离较远。全身毛被密而柔软，腹毛长于背毛。体背为浅红棕、棕黄或银灰色，背中区毛色较深、体背后方有数条隐约可见的黑横纹;四肢具2-3条黑横纹;尾粗圆，具有6-8条黑色环纹，尾端黑色。
栖息于草原、稀树林、荒漠或戈壁地区等。性耐寒冷。食物以啮齿类为主，偶尔盗食家禽。常单独活动，居于石缝 石块下或以旱獭洞为窝。交配期多在2月，4-5月产仔 每窝3-6仔。
啮齿类的天故，能消灭害鼠。野生种群数量较少，现是我国n级保护动物。
