人们在生活中广泛使用的塑料制品，因长期不能自行分解，会积聚过多而酿成可怕的白色污染。近年来，随着基因工程技术的不断发展，一种新的生态塑料的研究已取得突破。
美国的生物学家已把两种外源基因植入芥菜体内，并把这些植株同携带这两种基因的子代进行杂交，结果在芥菜的叶子里产生了一种可以分解的塑料物质——多烃基丁酸。瑞士的科学家则用生物技术，在实验里培育着大批能生产塑料的细菌。这种细菌体内有一个塑料圆球，把这种圆球分离出来，并用电子束照射后，可获得一种酷似橡胶的物质，其性能在－２０℃～１７０℃的温度界限内不会改变。
这些生态塑料用完后，能在自然界较快自行分解。如今，从甜菜、甘蔗、马铃薯以及其他多种作物中，把碳转移出来的研究陆续取得成果，并产生出多烃基丁酸。生态塑料已从实验阶段步入实用阶段，在外科手术和食品包装等方面开始应用，对减少白色污染，开始发挥出其特殊的作用。
