    由小麦属和黑麦属物种经属间有性杂交和杂种染色体数加倍而人工结合成的新物种。外部形态介于双亲之间,而偏于小麦。须根系和分蘖节较小麦发达,增强了植株的耐旱耐瘠能力。茎分蘖节成球状体,贮藏营养物质多,分化健壮  ,新器官的潜力也比小麦强;各节长度和直径一般大于小麦  。叶片较小麦长而厚,叶色较深,被茸毛,叶鞘有蜡粉层。麦穗比小麦大,小花数多,芒较小麦长。颖果较小麦大,红色或白色,角质或半角质。果皮和种皮较厚,因而休眠期长于小麦,一般遇雨不易在穗上发芽,且对胚和胚乳有较强的保护作用。耐寒、耐瘠、耐旱、耐干热风和耐荫力强,在气候条件多变、水肥条件较差的高寒地区,能显示其稳产优势  ,产量高于小麦。抗病性也较小麦强。
    中国八倍体小黑麦,是中国特有种。栽培地区现主要分布在西南、西北高寒瘠薄山区。对土壤要求不严,以土层深厚、肥沃的为宜。因根系发达,适当加深耕作层对提高产量有重要作用。因生育期长、分蘖力强,在瘠薄山区施足基肥常是丰产的关键。为防止倒伏,须合理密植和在拔节期间合理运用肥水,防止徒长。收获后脱粒不易,须用机械脱粒。
