分布于新疆霍城县天山支脉阿克拉斯山的前山荒漠带。
通常背甲长约12-16厘米，宽约10-14厘米。背甲常为黄橄榄色;所有盾片均具明显的同心环纹。头较小，头顶具对称大鳞。四肢黄色，粗壮，圆柱状。每肢具四爪，趾间无蹼。头和四肢均可缩入壳内。
常栖息于肥沃的草原、荒凉的沙漠地区或海拔700-1000米的黄土丘陵。生活在阴坡凹地和土质湿润、篙草丰富地带;以植物的嫩枝叶和草为食。不饮水，所需水分从食物中获得。3-5月繁殖，一般产卵2-4枚。孵化期60天左右。干旱或寒冷时掘洞休眠，待条件好转再出来活动。
为我国国家I级保护动物，不能任意捕捉。
