鲱形目鲱科鳓属的一种。又称白鳓鱼、鳓鱼、曹白鱼、白鳞鱼、鲞鱼、快鱼、鲙鱼。长约22.5～33厘米，最大可达60厘米。体长椭圆形，侧扁。头后部略凸。腹缘有锯齿状棱鳞。头前端尖，吻上翘。眼略大。两颌、腭骨和舌上密布细小牙齿。体被中等大的圆鳞，无侧线。尾鳍分叉深。全身银白色。仅吻端、背鳍、尾鳍和体背侧为淡黄绿色。
为亚热带及暖温带近海洄游性的中上层鱼类。分布于印度到日本南部海区，在中国沿海均有分布。在产大黄鱼的海区，常伴有鳓鱼群。以头足类、虾类、鱼类、糠虾类和毛颚类为食。每年4～6月为产卵期。鲜食或加工成干咸品。
