鳞翅目的 1科。成虫翅灰、白或黑而有黑斑，幼虫取食紫草科植物的中小型蛾类。原名紫草蛾科，通称草蛾。全世界已知约250种,主要分布在北半球。中国已知有30余种。由于前翅大多有黑色斑点与巢蛾科相似，曾一度有人把它列入巢蛾总科。但它的前R5脉不是明显伸到外缘，下唇须强烈弯曲向上，所以应属麦蛾总科。它与织蛾科十分接近,主要区别为后翅M2脉距M1脉比M3脉近，而织蛾科M2脉距M3脉比M1脉近。
本科成虫头部光滑，无单眼、前翅上有多少不等的黑斑点，中室长,无副室，R4 和R5 脉共柄，A脉基部分叉大，后翅M3和Cu1脉同出一点或共柄（见图）。雄性外生殖器有发达的钩形突，颚形突分口尾两部，表面往往生有齿。幼虫除为害紫草科植物外，还为害毛茛科、石竹科、荨麻科、玄参科、唇形科、漆树科、杨柳科等植物。
