昆虫纲鳞翅目(Lepidoptera)夜蛾科(Noctuidae)。又名莲纹夜蛾,俗称夜盗虫、乌头虫等。作物害虫。世界性分布。中国除青海、新疆未明外,各省(自治区)都有发生。幼虫取食甘薯、棉花、芋、莲、田菁、大豆、烟草、甜菜和十字花科和茄科蔬菜等近 300种植物的叶片,间歇性猖獗为害。成虫体长14~21毫米;翅展37~42毫米,褐色,前翅具许多斑纹,中有一条灰白色宽阔的斜纹,故名。后翅白色,外缘暗褐色。卵半球形,直径约0.5毫米;初产时黄白色,孵化前呈紫黑色,表面有纵横脊纹,数十至上百粒集成卵块,外覆黄白色鳞毛。老熟幼虫体长38~51毫米,夏秋虫口密度大时体瘦,黑褐或暗褐色;冬春数量少时体肥,淡黄绿或淡灰绿色。蛹长18~20毫米,长卵形,红褐至黑褐色。腹末具发达的臀棘一对。中国从北至南一年发生4~9代。以蛹在土中蛹室内越冬,少数以老熟幼虫在土缝、枯叶、杂草中越冬。南方冬季无休眠现象。发育最适温度为28~30℃,不耐低温,长江以北地区大都不能越冬。各地发生期的迹象表明此虫有长距离迁飞的可能。成虫具趋光和趋化性。卵多产于叶片背面。幼虫共6龄,有假死性。4龄后进入暴食期,猖獗时可吃尽大面积寄主植物叶片,并迁徙他处为害。天敌有小茧蜂、广大腿蜂、寄生蝇、步行虫,以及多角体病毒、鸟类等。
防治措施主要有用糖醋或发酵物加毒药诱杀成虫;在幼虫进入暴食期前的点片发生阶段喷施敌百虫、马拉硫磷、杀螟松、辛硫磷、乙酰甲胺磷等农药;保护和利用天敌,应用多角体病毒消灭幼虫等。
