中国历史最久的大学新闻系。1929年9月创立于上海。1937年抗日战争爆发后，随校先后迁往江西庐山、贵州贵阳。1938年又迁往四川重庆。1946年迁回上海。中华人民共和国建立初期，华东新闻学院、中国新闻专科学校、上海暨南大学新闻系、圣约翰大学新闻系、民治新闻专科学校等单位先后并入。 该系设有新闻学(4年制)、国际新闻(双学士6年制)、广播电视(4年制)和书刊编辑(4年制)4个专业，有新闻理论、中国新闻史、外国新闻事业、广播和电视、新闻采访与写作、编辑与评论、新闻摄影、文选与写作 8个教研室和新闻学研究室。除本科外，研究生按新闻理论、中国新闻史、传播学、图像传播、编辑、评论、写作、广播与电视等方向招生，攻读硕士学位。其中新闻学方向招收博士研究生。有教授7人，副教授10人，其中2名教授是博士研究生导师。中华人民共和国建立前，本科毕业生共 262人。中华人民共和国建立后，至1986年止，本科毕业生1614人，双学位毕业生29人，大专毕业生68人，硕士研究生毕业生22人。该系师生于1929年创设复旦新闻学会，1931年成立复新通讯社，1935年举办世界报纸展览会。曾先后编辑出版《新闻世界》、《明日的新闻》、《新闻学期刊》和《新闻大学》等刊物。
