地球上的自然资源分为"可再生"与"不可再生"两大类。
可再生的自然资源指的是在太阳光的作用下，可以不断自己再生的物质。最典型的可再生资源有植物、生物质能、太阳能、风能等。
地球上不可再生的自然资源主要有石油、煤炭、天然气和其它所有矿产资源。它们经过了上亿年才得以形成，因此不可再生。这些资源的储量随着人类的消耗而越来越少。
地球上的生物物种也是宝贵的不可再生自然资源。任何一种生物的灭绝意味着地球永久性地丢失了一个物种独特而珍贵的基因库。因此，如果是由人的活动造成的物种灭绝，其损失将无法估量。
