鼠兔科成员因外形酷似仓鼠而得名。鼠兔体型很小,耳朵短而圆,没有尾巴。鼠兔主要分布于亚洲中部到东北部一带,其中青藏高原附近和亚洲中部的高原、山地最为丰富,少数可见于在北美洲西部。鼠兔多生活于地面植被矮小稀疏的地区,常挖复杂的洞穴系统居住,有些鸟类如褐背拟地鸦和雪雀等则可借助鼠兔的洞穴居住,这种“鸟鼠同穴”对双方都有好处。
