制备方法：（1）以2,4-二氯苯酚为原料，2,4二氯苯酚与氢氧化钾反应生成二氯酚钾。再与2,5-二氯硝基苯在铜粉催化下，反应得到2,4,4'-三氯-2'-硝基二苯醚。再用铁粉还原生成2,4,4'-三氯-2'-氨基二苯醚，再重氮化水解得到产品。（2）以邻甲氧基苯酚为原料，氢氧化钾粉末和邻甲氧基苯酚（愈创木酚），反应制得邻甲氧基苯酚钾盐。与溴苯反应甲氧基二苯醚，通入氯气氯化，制得2,4,4'-三氯-2'-甲氧基二苯醚。以AICI3为催化剂水解生成2,4,4'-三氯-2'-羟基二苯醚。
用途：防腐剂和防霉剂，用于化妆品，乳剂和树脂，也用来制造消毒药皂。该品小鼠口服LD50为4g/kg。
