六安市城南中学位于六安市南郊淠河畔，交通便利，环境宜人。
2001年8月，该校顺利通过评估验收，升级为市级示范高中。市级示范高中——城南中学，始建于1969年8月，原名城南镇中心小学（附设初中部）。1970年迁址到城南镇宝丰寺，更名为城南初中。1972年再度迁址到现在校址，同年增设高中部。随着我区基础教育的不断发展壮大，在全校师生的共同努力下，2001年通过市评估验收，成为六安市示范高中。
我校现有61个高中教学班，在校学生3011人，教职工225人，专任教师167人，本科教师156人，其中在编教师123人。高级教师42人，一级教师31人，在职硕士生16人（含结业）。学校占地面积138666平方米，建筑面积达40427平方米。
自从争创市级示范高中成功以后，我校就通过教代会确定了我们的近期目标为争创省级示范高中。在区委、区政府及市区教育主管部门的正确领导下，学校紧紧抓住“以学生发展为本”的办学理念，大力秉承艰苦奋斗，团结务实的光荣传统。四年来，全体师生同心同德，凝心聚力，科学高效配置硬件，系统规范打造软件，教学理念先进，教师素质优良，学生发展全面，学校声誉较高。
全体教师有良好的政治修养，高尚的道德涵养，先进的教育理念，我校拥有7名市区级“师德标兵”。拥有省级“特级教师”“优秀教师”和“骨干教师”，拥有44名市区级骨干教师，学校先后多次被评为市区级“教学先进单位”，多次受到区政府嘉奖。
管理出质量，管理出效益。高考本科达线人率逐年攀升，本科达线数增加迅速，2002年达线149人，2003年达数191人，2004您突破300人大关。近年来，会考合格率100%，优秀率40%以上，多次被市教育局评为“会考工作先进单位”“高考工作先进单位”。
