植物形态：落叶乔木，高可达25米。树皮灰白色，纵裂成阔条状，小枝有沟槽，密生柔毛。叶互生，革质或坚纸质，叶片倒卵状椭圆形，长7~14厘米，顶端钝，基部楔形，边缘有6~12对波状钝圆齿，上面疏生星状毛或近于无毛，下面密生灰色星状绒毛，侧脉9~12对，直达边缘；叶柄长3~5毫米，少数达10毫米。花黄绿色，单性同株；雄花排列成茅荑花序，下垂，生于上年生枝条上；花被6深裂，雄蕊6枚，偶为8枚；雌花单生或2~3朵聚生于新梢叶腋内，子房下位，3室。总苞浅杯状，鳞片卵状披针形，呈复瓦状排列，紧贴，每1总苞通常内含坚果1个，坚果园锥形或长卵形，果实有时幼时被虫害而长成苞片状球形的虫瘿，供药用。 生态分布：产长江流域至南部各省；多生于阔叶林边，山坡灌丛中，尤以砍伐迹地为最多。 药用部分：白栎蓓（即果实的虫瘿）入药，秋季采收。 用途：治小儿疳积，大人疝气及小儿尿如米泔，火眼赤痛。用量：5~7钱。
