西藏东部大河之一,属双干河流。发源于德母拉山,源头海拔5475米,全长295公里,流域面积1.7827万平方公里。岗日嘎布山将察隅河上段分为两支:东支察隅河主流桑曲,长178公里,流域面积6780平方公里,落差4785米,自源头德母拉开始自西北向南东流,至竹瓦根转向南流,经察隅折向西南到下察隅与西支贡日嘎布曲汇合;贡日嘎布曲发源于岗日嘎布拉附近的现代冰川,自西北向东南流,长170公里,落差3000米,流域面积5376平方公里。桑曲和贡日嘎布曲汇合后称察隅河,向南流至前门里的巴兰岗附近流入印度,转向西南汇入布拉马普特拉河。察隅河流域属高山峡谷地貌,从源头到白学为峡谷段;白学到此坝桥为宽窄相间的河谷段,滑坡、崩塌、泥石流发育;此坝桥至零零通山嘴为交错的峡谷段。察隅河流域气候温暖湿润,降水丰沛,森林、动植物、水利等自然资源丰富,农业发达,是西藏自治区主要产稻区。
