位于新疆乌鲁木齐市南郊39公里处，因山口有巨大石崖，酷似旧时府第的照壁墙而得名。照壁山略呈金字塔形，山势陡峻，层林叠翠。山麓水西沟源自冰川，水宽流急，山谷两岸，均听到水声轰然。河谷两岩是对峙的悬崖，两山相夹，形成一道长达10多公里的峡谷。其中后山五道凹的一段峡谷，山回水转，石门林立，又革深林密，地险形胜，并常有马鹿、豹、野猪等出没，是探险揽胜的好地方。谷内有大片草场和茂密森林，汹涌的通天河纵贯沟中，别有一番野趣。并开展“通天河放漂”、“射箭”、“斗鸡”、“赛马”、“野炊”、“帐篷旅游”等一系列吸引游客参与的活动。谷中有楼房及帐篷招待所，可供数百人食宿。
照壁山北面的金山沟（东沟）及旱峡，山高谷深，怪石屹立，是另一个旅游的好去处。
