中型个体，体长90-120毫米。体近纺锤形。头颈邯显著。头触角粗大，外侧具一深沟，呈耳状，表面生有树枝状绒毛突起。眼位于嗅角基邵的前寸，黑色，无眼柄。足宽大，平滑，前端呈截状，两侧扩张，末端呈短尾状。身体为黄褐或青绿红，背面和边缘有数个青绿或蓝色的眼状斑。
生活在热带和亚热带浅海潮间带及潮下带泥沙质海底或栖息在海藻上。爬行运动，由于水温和食物条件变化，有类群移动的现象。杂食性，主要取食底栖硅藻，也吞食原生动物、挠足类等。2-3月为产卵旺季。
卵群带晒干后称为"海粉"，具有解血热的医疗作用，亦可食用，是一种名贵的海味品。
